FASHION AND CULTURE

Valentino SS16.
8 out of the 89 looks were given to models of color.

This week some of the major fashion house presented their shows during Paris Fashion Week, such as Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Miu Miu. However, one house stood out the most: Valentino. Valentino presented their 1920's African inspired Spring 2016 collection to the world, but was attacked by social media do to "cultural appropriation".

"Cultural appropriation is a sociological concept with views the adoption or use of elements of one culture by members of a different culture as a largely negative phenomenon."

Cultural appropriation has been a hot topic this year with many celebrities, such as Kylie Jenner or Miley Cyrus. They were attacked on social media as well.

What angered people the most was the fact that only 8 out of the 89 looks were given to models of color, the rest of the looks were given to white models, whose hair was done in cornrows and dreadlocks. I think it's amazing that Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli, creative directors of Valentino, attempted to embrace and recognize the amazing culture from Africa but I think the bone necklaces, embellishment and embroidery were a little too much. Fashion is about standing out; bending the rules, but people were offended.
